About this Episode

This episode contains sensitive material. Parental discretion is advised.

Sometimes, all it takes is a helping hand and a push in the right direction.

Tune in to today's episode of On the Spot and hear how Mary was inspired to open the Shelter Children's Home in Kenya. Growing up, Mary lived in a rural home in Kenya. She did a lot of church work and believed that she was meant to help other people. With the help of her grandmother, she began to pursue a cause she grew to become passionate about.

[4:57] “And my grandmother comes to this idea that: can we keep 10 children in a house and we take care of them and see what we can be? And so that was a lifetime thing. We said ‘Yes we want many women.’ We can try. And so we didn’t settle with 10, we settled with 25. So it became - Initially - it was like just an extracurricular activity, but now it had become a program. It becomes a commitment. It becomes a responsibility.”

Having to learn everything from scratch - from public speaking, to managing organizations, to fundraising - can be a daunting challenge, but the challenge is worth it. Mary fights for people and actively works to make an impact in the world through bringing awareness to cruel treatment of girls.

[18:30] “Groom yourself, wake up feeling strong and feeling energetic, put on your lipstick, do your hair, and walk out in confidence because the more confident they are, the more ready they are to face the world and to do what needs to be done.”

Through providing girls with the resources they need to be healthy and successful and the encouragement to pursue what they are passionate about, they can blossom into something special and forge their own path.
